Silks

Silks are commemorative cloth carteles, (posters) generally made of silk and issued in quite limited quantities for special taurine occasions, like the inauguration of a bull ring, the retirement of a matador, the alternativa of a matador, or other exceptional circumstances.

S4. Silk. Approximately 7"x11", upside down fan shaped. White background with yellow, red, blue, green, grey, & black painting. Above a crossed sword & tower, beneath that a banner reading "Club Taurino Malaguen~o", centered is a matador & bull in a natural pass, the whole bordered in yellow with trailing, multicolor leaves & flowers. It is silk screened. It is in fine condition. $20.00.

S5. Silk. Approximately 7"x11", upside down fan shaped. Blue background with yellow, red, blue, green, grey, & black painting. Above a crossed sword & tower, beneath that a banner reading "Club Taurino Malaguen~o", centered is a matador & bull in a natural pass, the whole bordered in yellow with trailing, multicolor leaves & flowers. It is silk screened. It is in fine condition. $20.00.

PHOTOGRAPHS

PH 5. This is a 4"x5" print of a photograph of Gilbert Roland & Litri. The corners are creased but just barely into the Image, not into either man. It is dated on the film Nov. 27, '51. $15.00.

PH 6. This 8"x10" black & white photograph is a portrait of Gilbert Roland and Portuguese matador Armando Soares on an outside balcony in Tijuana. Soares is bare chested, Rowland in a short sleeve, open collar, white shirt, both men smiling broadly. The photographer is unknown as is the handwriting of the notations on the back of the photo. It is in about fine condition. $30.00.

PH 9. This is a lot of two 5"x7" black & white photographs of Eloy working with the muleta & a very large bull. The passes, one to the right, the other to the left, are ayudados, both shot from Eloy's rear. They are beautiful, crisp images and deserve to be framed together. I do not know the photographer or location, but believe them to have been taken in Tijuana. They are in fine condition. $35.00 (for the pair).

PH 20. This 7.5" square black & white photograph is printed on 8"x10" paper. I believe it was taken by Gilbert Roland. In the bottom (wide) margin he has typed "My amigos at the "Old Plaza de Toros"/On a Sunday Afternoon./ Tijuana Mexico." It depicts the entrance into the ring with everyone, matadores to mules striding across the sand. I cannot recognize anyone in the photo. I think it is from the mid 1960s. It is in near fine condition with a slight curl. $10.00.

Vincent J-R Kehoe Photographs

This is a collection of original photographs by Vincent J-R Kehoe, author of AFICIONADO & WINE, WOMEN & TOROS. All were taken in the 1950's & 1960's, are black & white, and are in fine condition except as stated.

KP10. 8"x10", the vertical image is of the torero citing the toro (off camera) holding the banderillos, just about to begin his run. The back has Kehoe's inked studio stamp. $30.00.

KP11. 8"x10", the horizontal image is of a group of ten or more toros in the open field, two facing off for a charge at each other, the rest gathered around to watch. The back has a catalog number in Kehoe's hand. $30.00.

KP19. 11"x14", the horizontal image is of the opening parade across the ring head on into the viewer. The back has Kehoe's inked studio stamp and a note, "3rd day Paco Carrino Malaga Feria 1960," in Kehoe's hand. There is tape residue and a small abrasion on the back. $45.00.

KP24. 11"x14", the vertical image is of a tired bull catching its breath while being cited brazenly from 8' away right in front of the sol. There is nothing on the back. $40.00.

__________________________ Carteles: the following are paper posters originally advertising particular bullfighting performances.

C-9. This cartel (12"x 26.5") advertises the corrida at the Plaza de Toros & Museo Taurino de Mijas on Sunday, August 14, 1988, 4 extraordinarios novillos of Hnos. Galan for Pedro Castillo & Curro Vega. The image is of a smiling matador, facing the viewer right over the horns with the sword in perfectly, but apparently using nothing but his left hand to lead the black bull. The colors are primarily yellow, gold, brown, & sand. There are two horizontal creases from folding & the cartel has been rolled but is otherwise bright and in near fine condition. $20.00.

C-15. This cartel (20"x40") is for the San Isidro Feria 1983. It lists all the cartels for the 3 weeks, including matadors Espartaco, El Soro, Armillita, Paco Ojeda, & Nimen~o II. The image is from an oil painting of a rejoneador in traje corte on a white horse, having just places the banderillas in a large, black bull, horse & bull charging toward the viewer. It is signed in the painting J. Crosestrems. It was printed by Ortega of Valencia. Overall it is in very good condition, bright, with the only flaws being a small, closed tear halfway along the right edge & tack holes in the corners. $25.00.

C-16. This cartel (20"x40") is for the Fiestas de la Virgen y San Roque in the Plaza de Toros Alfaro, 1990. It lists all the cartels for the 4 days including matadors El Soro, Finito de Cordoba, Julio Aparicio, & Sergio Sanchez, It has been boldly inscribed with a narrow "felt" pen by matador Sergio Sanchez. The image is from an oil painting by Ballestar of a blond matador in white & gold traje executing an ayudado with a large black bull. The only flaw is a horizontal fold across the center. It is very bright & otherwise near fine condition. $25.00.

C-17. This cartel (21"x39") advertises 3 corridas in the Plaza de Toros de Barcelona in August, 1970. The matadors include "El Viti", Linares", "El Paquiro" & the Portuguese rejoneador Jose Maldonado Cortes. The image is from an oil painting by Ballestar of a paso por alto of a matador in violet & gold traje, the vigorous, black bull seeming to charge almost out of the painting into the viewer, a dramatic image. Except for three horizontal folds it is bright and in near fine condition. $30.00. C-18. This cartel (22"x39") advertises 5 corridas in Vic (Vich). It is undated as to year though dated 1989 in the painting. I believe it is from 1990. The matadors include Manili, Nimen~o II, & Roberto Dominguez. The image is from a painting by H. DiRosa, strikingly bold and expressionistic, dominated by a black bull with banderillas hooking a loose cape. The lettering is large, bright blue & red, and rather free form. The printed information is in French and the cartel is certainly of a clear French style. It is a quite beautiful composition, frankly of a much more artistic feel than most cartels. It has several small, closed tears along the edges but is otherwise bright and overall in very good condition. $20.00.

C-23. This cartel (19"x8.5") advertises the 11 September 1960 corrida in the Plaza de Toros Tarragona. It features rejoneador Don Silvestre Navarro Orenes & espadas Antonio Rodriguez Caro, Efrain Giron & Armando Conde. It is printed in black on a light orange-pink paper and has photographs of all 4 toreros, Don Silvestre in action & head and shoulder shots of the matadors in traje. There is a small, etched vignette at the top of a bull being worked with the muleta. The essential information is repeated in small boxes at the bottom of the cartel in French, English & German. It has one horizontal crease and is otherwise in near fine condition. $25.00.

A FEW ODD GRAPHICS: OG3. A modern reproduction of an engraving by Aillegas, dated 1857, depicting the matador asking permission for the kill, sword & cape under his arm, saluting with his cap the authority who is out of the image. In the near background is a quite jaded looking matador with a bandage around his head, smoking & leaning over the barrier. The condition is near fine with slight bumps to the corners well outside the image itself. The vertical piece measures 14"x11". $10.00

OG7. An 8.5"x8.5" original black ink drawing signed by British artist Derrick Taylor, dated (19)'82 with "for Gilbert" (Roland) lettered in the lower right corner, the light cardboard it is on appearing to have been cut from a record album cover. There are two images, one above & one below depicting a matador with large cape passing a rhinoceros in lieu of a bull using veronicas, the top image from behind the bottom from in front of the matador. It is a quite humorous sketch. It is in fine condition. $17.50.

OG8. A 9"x12" original drawing on red poster board lettered at the top "For Gil(bert Roland) on his birthday!" at the bottom "From El Inglese - Derico" (Derrick Taylor) depicts a bull snorting fire looking very eager from behind the barrier & saying "Si Senor". It is done in black felt tipped pen with highlights of yellow, white & gray tempera paint. It is a humorous work. It is in fine condition. $25.00.

OG11. This card is 9"x3" folded in half to make a greeting card. On the front, hand written in black ink is "Festas Felizes/Armando Soares"; on the back a photograph of Soares in traje, on shoulders, holding two ears. Inside handwritten in blue ink & signed by Soares is a note to "Estimado amigo". I cannot read all the note in part because of the hand writing, in part because of the spelling, e.g. "Fevereo me voy para Mexico." It discusses a wound & offers greetings to the wife & daughter. I believe it was sent to Gilbert Roland, but there is no internal evidence to support that belief. $17.50.

OG12. A set of 3: 8.5"x11" sepia prints each done by Vierge in Madrid 1889. These copies were printed in Mexico probably in the mid 1960s by Vilar y Trillas. They are each in fine condition. They are titled "Exterior de la Plaza de Toros de Madrid en una Tarde de Corrida", "Sen~alando la Estocada" & "El Arrastre". For the set $17.50.
